Background and History

The idea of Jamyang Boarding School, located in Leh came into existence in 2006 when His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, expressed concern over the lack of educational facilities for children from remote areas of Ladakh, especially from the Brogpa and Dardish communities of Aryan Valley. Initially, the idea was to set up educational daycare institutions in the vicinities of the villages, but since there was a lack of space to build schools and it was unlikely that qualified teachers could be convinced to settle there, it was decided to set up an exemplary boarding school in Leh, to take care and groom children, who were born in difficult circumstances in those remote villages.

Campus and Facilities

Subsequently, a large piece of land in a valley outside Leh, the capital of Ladakh, was donated by the Ladakh Buddhist Association with the blessing of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. The 1st building was constructed in 2008 and 63 students from the above-mentioned villages started their schooling on the 1st of September, 2008. The school campus, flanked by snowy peaks, has since then grown continuously and remarkably: through the construction of all necessary buildings to give the students a comfortable home and by admission numbers: In 2022, the school has as many as five times more students than at its opening year, 319 children studying at the Jamyang school, half of them girls. There is a lot of space for sports, utilized by both, boys and girls, in their free time. There is laughter and study time, discipline, and joyful play. There are dedicated “housemothers” taking care of the children, as well as cooks, producing delicious, home-cooked meals. Every morning the scent of freshly baked bread fills the air, while students do their morning yoga on the basketball field.

Admission and Education

The education of the children is free of cost and a committee selects the neediest children from the area. The school runs classes from Nursery to Class 10 and is currently registered with the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education. A dedicated community of teachers and staff members, many of whom have served the school since its inception, form the core of the school. It is thanks to their dedication that almost all the children, even though they come from impoverished backgrounds, are able to graduate from class 10 to high school. To date, only one Jamyang student has failed the final exams.

Student Life

The children are well-dressed, and have a tight weekly schedule with many activities. Parents may visit their children and in the harshest winter months, when schools are closed, the children return to their native homes for three months. There is a lot of pride in the native communities about the achievements of their children and an understanding has set in, how education, also the education of girls, matters. Without schooling, without being groomed in a mindful and caring environment, and without good food and medical assistance most of these students would have grown into a future of impoverished life as construction workers, laborers, or farmers with hardly any income to feed a family.

Achievements and Outcomes

Many excelled and graduated from class 12 at other schools, the first students that were admitted in 2008 now study at colleges and universities across the country, creating a future for themselves and their families. There is a lot of pride in the native communities about the achievements of their children and an understanding has set in, how education, also the education of girls, matters. Thanks to sponsorships by private people, these children now have choices and a chance to create their own future
